You may think all replacement window warranties are pretty much the same, and you would be mostly right. All reputable replacement window manufacturers will cover their products in the case of product defects, and some will even replace glass that is accidentally broken.

But just like any warranty, there are limitations, and those details can make all the difference as far as what is covered and what isn’t when it comes to your new windows and patio doors.

Coverage for Replacement Windows in Coastal Areas

Replacement window and door manufacturers will often exclude windows and doors installed in coastal homes from full coverage under their warranties. In the replacement window industry, a coastal home is generally defined as any home within two miles of the coast. That’s a lot of homes in the San Diego area!

We understand why they do this. The salty air causes corrosion in many of the metals used in replacement window and door hardware, and they don’t want to be replacing that hardware every time it is damaged due to corrosion.

In truth, the warranties of the window brands we sell at BM Windows don’t cover the hardware of windows installed in coastal homes either. That’s why we have decided to cover it with our own warranty!

BM Windows is now offering coverage for the hardware of any window or sliding patio door we install—even those in homes right on the ocean! This means, if your window or patio door hardware no longer functions due to corrosion or any other reason, we will repair or replace it at NO CHARGE! The only caveat to this warranty is that we don’t cover upgraded hardware or French door hardware.

So, as you shop for replacement windows and doors, make sure you look carefully at the warranties of both the products you’ll be purchasing and the company that will be installing them, especially if your home is located in a coastal area. If it’s unclear what is covered and what isn’t, ask your salesperson to explain what the fine print means.
