If you’re living in a San Diego home that still has single pane windows, you may have wondered if it’s really worth it to upgrade to dual pane replacement windows. To some people, dual pane windows can feel like a gimmick. It’s an extra pane of glass. How much of a difference can it really make? As it turns out, it can actually make a big difference!
What Are Dual Pane Replacement Windows?
First of all, let’s start by talking about what dual pane windows are. Dual pane windows are essentially windows that have two panes of glass installed within a window frame, with a space in between the panes. Replacement windows with dual panes are designed to fit in the exact spaces that your single pane windows currently occupy.
Even in the most basic dual pane windows, the extra pane of glass helps with both energy efficiency and sound suppression, making them preferable to single pane windows. Higher-end dual pane windows, like the ones we sell at BM Windows, have extra features for San Diego homeowners who want a substantial upgrade in the comfort level inside their home.
In some dual pane windows, you will find a special insulating gas, such as Argon, in between the two glass panes. Because this type of gas is denser than the air in our atmosphere, it helps to insulate a home from outside temperatures.

Another option with dual pane replacement windows is dissimilar glass thickness. This can help reduce the amount of noise coming into a home from the outside. This is a great option to consider if you live on a noisy street or if you just like an extra quiet house.
Are Dual Pane Replacement Windows Really Necessary for San Diego Homes?
Since most of San Diego has such a temperate climate, some homeowners wonder if upgrading to dual pane windows will really be worth it. The answer is “yes!” Most of the San Diego homeowners we work with tell us that if they knew how much of a difference dual pane windows would make in their home, they would have installed them years ago! They find that they rarely (if ever) need to use their heater or air conditioner anymore, which results in lower energy bills. In addition, their homes are noticeably quieter.
What About Triple Pane Windows for San Diego Homes?
If dual pane windows are so great, are triple pane windows even better? Well, yes and no. Triple pane windows are slightly more insulating than dual pane windows, but they come at a much higher price. As replacement window experts in San Diego, we find that the slight improvement in energy efficiency doesn’t justify the higher cost, so we don’t recommend them to our customers. In fact, we don’t even sell them at our San Diego replacement window company.
For the vast majority of San Diego homeowners looking to replace their windows, dual pane windows are the best choice.
