Do you worry about replacing all the windows in your home, only to have something happen that results in broken glass? This is a real concern. Glass is fragile, and accidents happen no matter how careful you are.
Here’s the great news: you can purchase replacement windows in San Diego that come with a warranty that will fix the broken glass at no extra cost to you! In the replacement window industry, this type of coverage is typically spelled out in a section of the warranty titled “Accidental Glass Breakage.”
Understanding an Accidental Glass Breakage Warranty on Replacement Windows in San Diego
Just about every replacement window sold in San Diego will come with some sort of warranty. This warranty will cover the windows in the case of manufacturing defects. With this warranty, the manufacturer is promising to repair or replace any product that is defective in nature for the term of the warranty. Some warranties are for 5, 10, or 20 years, but some manufacturers offer lifetime warranties.
The term “lifetime warranty” can be somewhat misleading. In the window industry a lifetime warranty covers the windows for as long as the original purchaser of the windows lives in the home. In other words, if you live in your home for 50 more years after your replacement windows are installed, your windows will be covered that whole time, but if you sell your home after just one year, the warranty will cease as soon as the home transfers ownership. A lifetime warranty could also be voided if the manufacturer goes out of business.
If a warranty is important to you, you need to understand what it covers and what it doesn’t because manufacturers’ warranties can vary quite a bit.
Not all replacement window warranties include coverage for accidental glass breakage.
Fortunately for BM Windows customers, all the replacement windows we currently offer include this benefit!
It typically doesn’t matter how your window is broken. It could be from a tree branch that gets broken off by the wind and hits your window, or it could be due to a neighbor kid throwing a rock at your home. The manufacturer should honor their accidental glass breakage coverage no matter the cause of the broken glass. However, window manufacturers typically have exclusions on their warranties, so be sure to understand what those are. For example, some manufacturers will not offer coverage on any specialty glass that is broken. Our preferred manufacturer, Anlin, offers coverage on all types of window glass, except for laminated glass. (Laminated glass is not often used for residential windows in San Diego, and if it is, it doesn’t get broken very often because it is made to be resistant to breakage.)

Replacement Windows with a Transferrable Warranty
We talked earlier about manufacturers that offer a lifetime warranty for accidental glass breakage. We should point out that some companies even offer a double lifetime warranty. Anlin is one of them. A double lifetime warranty means that the warranty can be transferred to the next owner of your home. In the case of Anlin, the subsequent owner of your home gets 20 years of warranty coverage on the windows you had installed, including for accidental glass breakage.
The coverage doesn’t transfer automatically. You have to fill out the proper form in order for the warranty to transfer, but it is a nice perk nonetheless!
Work with a Replacement Window Company in San Diego That Will Help with Warranty Claims
Does filing a warranty claim with a manufacturing company sound overwhelming to you? Maybe you’ve never done anything like that before, or you just don’t like dealing with paperwork, or you worry about making a mistake during the process and having your claim denied.
When you work with a replacement window company in San Diego like BM Windows, we can help you with the warranty claims process. Since we work with window manufacturers all the time, we know how to make the process as seamless as possible. We know what type of information the warranty department is looking for and can help you through the entire claims process. If you don’t get an answer from the manufacturer right away, we can follow up on your behalf. This isn’t usually an issue, because we only work with manufacturers who truly stand behind their products, but occasionally, the warranty department needs a little bit of “encouragement” to keep the process moving forward.
