Are there any tax credits for energy-efficient windows?

Tax credits and rebates are given out to incentivize homeowners to complete home upgrades that help to save energy, such as new energy-efficient windows and doors. These tax credits and rebates can help offset the overall cost of your replacement windows and make them more affordable. However, tax credits and rebates are not always available specifically for replacement windows. Sometimes, the credits and rebates available are for other energy-efficient home upgrades, such as solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, or smart thermostats.
If you are a San Diego homeowner, there are two main places you can look to find out if any rebates are being offered at this time:
For any federal tax credits, check the IRS website and look for any Residential Energy Efficient Property Credits that may be available for energy-efficient replacement windows. To give you an idea of what kind of tax credit you can expect to receive when one is available, in the past, the IRS has offered a 10% tax credit on the cost of replacement windows and doors, up to $500.
You should note that the federal government typically offers tax credits, as opposed to tax deductions for energy-efficient home upgrades. A tax credit is preferable to a deduction. Receiving a tax credit means that you will get that amount taken off of your tax bill or added to your refund. A tax deduction simply reduces the amount of your income that is taxed.
To qualify for these rebates and credits, however, you must install replacement windows that meet certain energy efficiency standards. For example, to receive a federal tax credit, your new windows and doors must be tested and certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) and meet all of the stringent energy efficiency standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ENERGY STAR rebates are, of course, only given out when a homeowner purchases an ENERGY STAR-certified product.
