Lately we’ve been talking a lot about sliding patio doors, and for good reason. Sliding doors are extremely common, and most San Diego homes have at least one of them.
San Diego homeowners wanting vinyl replacement patio doors installed into their homes have more options than they probably know. Not only can you choose from a two, three, or four-panel sliding patio door, but within each of those choices, there are additional options.

For example, if you choose a three-panel patio door, you have the option of an operable panel that opens from left to center, right to center, center to left, or center to right. When you choose a four-panel patio door, you can have a single operable panel that opens from the far right to the center, or the far left to center. If you want two operable panels in your four-panel sliding patio door, the two center panels will open toward the two outer panels.
In homes with a large area to accommodate sliding patio doors, some homeowners will choose three-panel doors over four-panel doors because the viewing area in three-panel doors will be less obstructed, as three-panel doors only have two posts. Four-panel doors have three posts, which may be too “busy” of a look for some. Sliding door panels range in width from 5 feet all the way up to 12 feet, so a three-panel door is an option even in large spaces.
Four-panel doors have an advantage, however, in that they can have two operable panels. The two center panels slide over the two outer panels, creating a wide opening to the outdoors. This configuration is popular with homeowners who want to extend their indoor living area outdoors and take advantage of the mild San Diego climate. The wide opening that a four-panel door offers creates a seamless flow from an indoor living room to an outdoor patio.
Most of the sliding patio doors we install for our San Diego customers have panels that are all the same size, but we can create custom configurations with panels of different widths. Contact us today to discuss the sliding patio door options that will work best for your San Diego home.
