In a previous blog post, we went into great detail about replacement windows for San Diego homeowners who are just getting started in the process of researching and purchasing new windows. So, we thought we would do the same for homeowners looking into new patio doors.
Much of the information found in the previous post applies to shopping for replacement patio doors, such as looking for a company that provides you with expert installation and that can educate you on the various brands and lines on the market. And just like replacement windows, replacement patio doors fit into the existing opening of your current patio door, allowing you to have brand new doors without much of the hassle and mess associated with a typical construction project.
However, the styles of doors are obviously different than windows. At BM Windows, we sell some of the most popular types of patio doors for San Diego homes: sliding patio doors, French patio doors, and French sliding patio doors. Read on to learn the differences between these types of replacement patio doors, and see which type would be best for your home:
Sliding Patio Doors
Sliding patio doors are, by far, the most popular types of patio doors found in San Diego homes. Many homes were originally built with sliding patio doors, so people are very familiar with them and their advantages.

Sliding patio doors are made up of large glass panels, one or more of which slide open on a track, in front of another glass panel. Behind each operable panel is a screen, which can also be easily opened for easy access to the outdoors. At BM Windows, we sell sliding patio doors with two panels, three panels, or four panels. In many San Diego homes, you’ll see a two-panel patio door that leads to the backyard or a balcony, but in larger homes, you may find sliding patio doors with three or four panels. All of our patio doors are made to order, so you can get a replacement sliding patio door, no matter the size of your current patio door setup.
We also offer sliding patio doors with in-glass pet doors. Pet owners throughout San Diego love this option, because it gives their pets access to the outdoors, without having to cut a hole in their wall to install a pet door.
French Patio Doors
Also known as French hinged patio doors, these exterior doors bring a feeling of sophistication and elegance wherever they are installed! These types of doors come in sets of two, with each door able to swing outward, just like a typical door. This gives you the ability to have a wide opening to your back patio, balcony, porch, or wherever they are installed. The glass panels let in a ton of natural light, but they have energy-efficient technology to help keep out the heat and cold.
French Sliding Patio Doors
Another patio door option we offer at BM Windows is French sliding patio doors. These doors have the same look as traditional French doors, but instead of swinging open, one of the panels slides open in front of the adjacent fixed panel. French sliding doors are typically used in places where a homeowner wants the look of a French door, but a hinged door is not feasible, such as on a small balcony.
