Our many years of experience in the replacement window industry in San Diego tells us that the majority of homeowners who want to replace their windows want to do so to make their home more energy efficient. In other words, they want to better insulate their homes from outside temperatures, so they don’t have to use as much energy to heat or cool them.
If your home has old windows, they are not doing you any favors when it comes to keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. They are letting in both heat and cold. Replacing your windows with more energy-efficient products can make a huge difference in how much you need to use your air conditioner and heater to keep the inside temperature regulated.
Replacing your windows can be a relatively large investment in your home, so you want to make sure you get your money’s worth. Don’t just choose any windows that claim to be energy efficient. Instead, look for ones that will make a noticeable difference.
What We Mean When We Say Our Replacement Windows Are “Energy Efficient”
Here’s the thing about the term “energy efficient” when it comes to replacement windows—it’s a relative term. If your home currently has old, single-pane windows with aluminum frames with noticeable gaps, any windows you replace them with will be more energy efficient in comparison. So, just because you see windows claiming to be energy efficient, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are among the best when it comes to insulating a home. It just means they are better than the energy-inefficient windows from 30-plus years ago.
The windows we sell at BM Windows can be considered very energy efficient even when compared to other replacement windows currently on the market.
Just about all replacement windows are evaluated by the same independent, third-party organization: the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The NFRC rates windows in five categories: U-Factor, Visible Transmittance, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), Air Leakage, and Condensation Resistance. Here’s a brief description of what these terms mean:

- U-Factor measures how well a product keeps heat from escaping a room
- Visible Transmittance measures how well a product lights your home with daylight
- Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures how much solar heat a product allows in
- Air Leakage measures how much air will enter a room through a product
- Condensation Resistance measures a product’s resistance to condensation
When it comes to determining the energy efficiency of a window, U-Factor, SHGC, and Air Leakage are the ratings you want to look at and compare from brand to brand. The SHGC rating is probably the most important rating to consider, since San Diego residents tend to be more concerned about keeping out the heat than keeping it in. (In colder climates, a good U-Factor rating would be a high priority.) A low SHGC number is what you want—the lower the better—on a scale of 0-1.
At BM Windows, we sell windows that have some of the best SHGC, U-Factor, and Air Leakage ratings compared to other windows sold in San Diego—especially those at a similar price point. Our windows will help your home stay cooler all summer long, without having to use your air conditioner excessively. In the winter, you may find that you never have to run your heater at all!
ENERGY STAR Certified Replacement Windows for San Diego Homes
All of the windows we sell to our San Diego customers come with the ENERGY STAR certification. This tells you that our products meet or exceed the minimum standards for energy efficiency, as set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. When you purchase windows that are ENERGY STAR certified, it may qualify you for certain rebates and tax incentives, in addition to saving you money on your monthly energy bills.
Affordable, Energy-Efficient Windows
