When we meet with San Diego homeowners who are interested in replacing the windows in their homes, most of them want to do so to better insulate their homes from outside noise and temperatures. This is a great reason to replace your home’s windows, and the high-quality, energy-efficient windows we sell at BM Windows will definitely do that for you! But since you’re replacing your windows anyways, you might also want to consider solving some other problems by changing up the styles of windows you have in your home.
By “styles” of windows, we are referring to windows with different ways of opening and closing. In your San Diego home, you likely have several different styles of windows. Some of the most common styles are sliders, single-hung windows, casement windows, and picture windows. (You can read more about these styles, and other less-common styles, on our products page.)
You can certainly replace your current windows with new windows of the same style, but we would encourage you to go through each room in your home and consider if the styles you have now are working well for you, or if a different window style would be an improvement. Here are a few things to consider as you do so:
Do Any Rooms Need More Ventilation?
Different styles of windows offer different levels of ventilation. A picture window will offer no ventilation to a room because it can’t be opened or closed. With a single-slider or single-hung window, only half of the window unit can be opened. Casement and awning windows, on the other hand, can be fully opened (although these types of windows are limited to smaller sizes).
If you have a room that could use some extra ventilation, mention this to the BM Windows team member who comes to your home for your consultation to see what he or she suggests.
Are Any of Your Windows Hard to Open and Close?
Over time, older windows can become difficult to open. This happens for a variety of reasons, and new windows will definitely help here, but what we want to address here is something a little different.
Some windows are hard to open and close simply because of where they’re located and how they operate. For example, you might currently have a single-hung window behind your couch and you have to actually stand on your couch to open and close it. A better solution for that space could be a casement window that has a crank mechanism down low, allowing you to more easily operate the window.
Do You Want a Better View of the Outdoors?
With windows that are divided into two or three separate panels of glass (such as sliders and single-hung windows) you will have framing material breaking up the view out of that window. If that bothers you, you could possibly switch the type of window you use in that space to a picture window or casement window, which have no such “interruptions” in the glass area.
