We’re starting a new series on the BM Windows blog, and it’s all about replacement window warranties. We are well aware that very few people read the warranties on any of the products they purchase. There’s just too much small print and hard-to-understand legal jargon for most people to spend the time reading them.
For many products, it’s not vital that you understand the warranty, but for large purchases like replacement windows and doors, you definitely want to know what’s included (and not included) in the warranty.
When it comes to replacement windows, warranties can vary quite a bit. You can buy windows with a 5- or 10-year warranty that covers very little, or a double lifetime warranty that covers just about any problem you can imagine.
Here at BM Windows in San Diego, we only sell replacement window products with a lifetime or double lifetime warranty. In this blog post, we want to focus on the double lifetime warranty, since it is less common in the industry and not as many people are familiar with it.
What’s a Double Lifetime Warranty?
A double lifetime warranty is pretty much as good as it gets in the replacement window industry. With a double lifetime warranty, not only are your replacement windows covered for as long as you own your home, but you can also pass the warranty along to the next homeowner.
This is great for two reasons. First and most obviously, your investment in new windows is protected while you own your home. If anything goes wrong with your windows due to a manufacturing defect, they will be repaired or replaced at no cost to you or the next owner. Second, it tells you about the quality of the windows. If a manufacturer is confident enough to guarantee their windows for two lifetimes, they are likely high-quality, durable windows.
Why Do I Need a Double Lifetime Warranty?
You may be wondering, “Why should I care about a double lifetime warranty?” This is a great question. Most people don’t see much value in a warranty that covers the next owner of their home, but in certain circumstances, there could be tremendous value.
Home buyers are becoming more and more savvy. Many are looking for the best value available in a home—especially in an expensive market like San Diego. One of the things they often consider is the cost of the home’s upkeep. For example, if a home has solar panels, they’ll know that their monthly electric bill will be lower than it would be in a home that doesn’t have solar panels, making the home more affordable. If they see that your home has new, upgraded windows, and that they are still under warranty, they may be willing to offer you more for your house, or choose yours over another one they were considering that doesn’t have new windows under warranty, since they know they won’t have to put any money into the home’s windows.
