San Diego Windows and Doors: What We Sell and What We Don’t

Searching online for a local company that sells the exact products you need for your home can sometimes be tricky. You might type into a search engine what you are looking for, and the search engine will give you all kinds of results that are not relevant or not really what you are looking for.

For example, if you’re looking for new windows for your San Diego home, you might do a search for something like “San Diego windows”. You’ll certainly get search results for companies like ours that install replacement windows in San Diego homes, but you might also get results that have to do with car windshields. With search engines like Google, you can never be too sure what types of results they will give you.  

As you wade through the search results, it can be pretty easy to figure out which companies sell the types of windows you need, but with doors, it can be a little trickier. This is because not all companies that advertise that they sell doors in San Diego sell the same types of doors—and there are a lot of different types of doors! Think about all the different types of doors just in your own home. You may have exterior doors, interior doors, closet doors, cabinet doors, garage doors, screen doors, patio doors, French doors, and/or dog doors.

Glass Patio Doors with Tempered Glass

One thing that all our doors have in common is that they are made mostly of glass. They all have vinyl frames surrounding the glass, but the majority of the surface area is glass. More specifically, the doors have safety tempered glass. Tempered glass is much stronger than regular glass (about four times stronger), but if it is ever broken, will it fracture into small, pebble-like pieces that are relatively harmless—no sharp glass shards to worry about.

Exterior Patio Doors

All the doors we sell are also made to be exterior doors. We typically call them “patio doors,” but they can lead out to areas other than a patio, such as a balcony or a front porch. Because they are exterior doors, they all have energy-saving technology built into them. The glass in the doors we sell have special Low-E coatings that help to keep out the heat and cold from outside and that also block up to 99% of the sun’s UV rays. The dual panes of glass have a special gas inserted in between them to further improve the doors’ energy efficiency.

You have probably seen French doors that look similar to the ones we sell in the interiors of homes in San Diego. Typically, they lead to an office, formal dining room, or den. Interior French doors don’t have the same insulating properties as our French patio doors. They are not made to keep out the heat and cold from the outside, nor are they meant to block UV rays. These are not the types of doors we sell at BM Windows and are not suitable to be used as exterior doors.
